I want to become a Real Estate Appraiser, is my plan realistic?

In the Commonwealth of Virginia (DC/Metro) you must be an apprentice for two years. Considering this I ume the pay will be very little. So with that being said I will have to continue working for xyz company and do appraisals on the side like one or two a day time and sunlight permitting and a few on the weekends. Does this sound realistic? Also on average what is the percentage of pay (if any) while an apprentice, and what is the percentage of pay as a legitimate full time Appraiser? I have a RE License and I am a former Mortgage Loan Processor so I have some knowledge of appraisals. In case you are wondering. Thank you
