I am having problems with my new Guinea Pig, EXPERTS ONLY PLEASE?

All its doing is just staying in its box thing not moving at all, the only time it eats is when food is placed near the box or when I wave a carrot in front of its face. I don't think it has drunk from the water bottle yet, but since I took out the box he is exploring the cage for often, is this a good idea? Or should I just keep the box in there and let him get adjusted? By the way I have only had him 1 day. I have no real idea what I am doing, I read up on a lot of sites and I haven't been able to draw any conclusive lines, so I am asking experts on Guinea Pigs only please.
