How do you properly clean a carbon steel knife?

I recently bought a Ka-Bar Kukri Knife made from 1085 carbon steel and coated with black epoxy powder. I used it for the first time today chopping down brush and saplings and now it's all dirty, so I want to know how to properly clean it, preferably with household items. I was gonna just try to use water BUT since it's carbon steel it'll probably cause it to start rusting. Thanks for the help.
