Can I set a webcam to automatically take pictures when I'm not home?

I've never really used a webcam, but I'm concerned roommates are getting into my things, and someone recommended using a webcam to record activity in my room. Can I set the camera to DISCREETLY take pictures every 10 or so seconds while i'm away? I'd like to know if its possible before I spend the money. Thanks!
