Can I renounce to green card and then get it back?

I'm a green card holder through my wife's employer. I've been offered a very good position at my country's consular office, but to accept it I need to become a diplomat. This is only for 6 years max. Can I renounce to my green card status in order to gain diplomatic status, and then, after a few years, recover my permanent resident status since my wife will still be a green card holder?
